"Back seat" (two words) is the standard noun for the rear seat in a vehicle, while "backseat" (one word) functions as an adjective describing something related to that position.
Well, the first release of the year is here. Why is Backseat first? Truth be told it was the first one to be finished. (That’s it … no over thinking here … 😅)
The day it was written was my first day attempting a fast. It was a successful 24 hour fast of just water, tea and a bit of iced black coffee (I needed the excitement). Someone mentioned to me in passing how and why they fast regularly. Upon further research, the benefits seemed miraculous so I decided to give it a whirl.
Writing a song about "that night where the vibes were off when you met your (now ex) girl friend in the city and now looking back it seems so obvious that she was checked out” was not on the list of benefits; but it sure did show up.
One of the unexpected difficulties about fasting was figuring out what to do with all the extra time. So I dragged myself to the studio and pulled up a blank session to see what would happen. I don't remember much from that session except for finishing the song that day and not realizing I was writing about a real life evening until the last verse.
As far as I'm concerned, a song's intended meaning is secondary to the meaning that hits the listener in a particular moment. Hearing the same song in new ways is one of my favorite things about music so I'll stop over explaining and potentially ruining that for this song.
Backseat is out now on all platforms (and this website) so take a listen or ten and share with a friend you think might need to hear it.
✌️♥️🎶
